Joseph's dream message is one of comfort, one of affirmation, one of direction. As a spiritual director, I like the idea of dreams as spiritual direction. Here God uses a dream to assure Joseph that his original desire to marry Mary is still viable. Apparently, Joseph was paying attention and married into God's future.
