Christian Spiritual Formation

Altered Books

What is an altered book? It is the process of altering a book from its book-ness into a piece of artwork. I first discovered altered books while perusing a shelf in Barnes and Noble. The idea fascinated me because it combines two things I love—books and art. I began to think about the possibilities for using the art form in spiritual formation. An altered book seems to describe the inner altering that takes place as we walk the spiritual path. So I persuaded two friends to join me on an experimental journey into the world of altered books and spiritual formation. The pages you see on this blog are part of that journey and represent my artistic reflections. My final altered books do indeed reflect an altered inner life. They reflect my spiritual journey into transformation.
